GM (Add Key) Onboard Programming Method for “Regular Keys”
If you need to add a new key to your GM vehicle and already have a working key, the process is typically simple and can be done without special tools or a trip to the dealer. Follow these steps carefully to ensure successful key programming:
Insert the existing, working key into the ignition. Place your current key (the one already programmed to your vehicle) into the ignition cylinder.
Turn the key to the "On" position (without starting the engine). Rotate the key forward to the “On” position, which is just before the point where the engine cranks. In this position, the dashboard lights and gauges should activate.
Leave the key in the "On" position for a moment. Let the system recognize the working key. This step ensures the vehicle’s immobilizer system registers the existing key as valid.
Turn the key back to the “Off” position and remove it. After the key has been recognized, turn it off and remove it from the ignition.
Quickly insert the new key. Without waiting too long (usually within a few seconds), insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition cylinder.
Turn the new key to the “On” position. Turn the new key to the “On” position, just as you did with the first key. At this point, the system should begin recognizing the new key.
Wait for the security light to turn off. After a few seconds, the vehicle’s security or immobilizer light (often shaped like a padlock or key symbol) should go out, indicating that the new key has been successfully programmed to the vehicle.
Test the new key. To verify that the programming was successful, turn the ignition off and attempt to start the vehicle with the newly programmed key. If the engine starts and the security light remains off, the process was completed correctly.
